As you are well aware, obesity is at epidemic proportions in Houston and its effects on our patients and practices have become overwhelming. As gastroenterologists, we see every day the health problems that obesity causes including but not limited to fatty liver disease and cirrhosis, GERD, esophageal cancer and gallstones. The Obesity Task Force, created by the American Gastroenterological Association has recently mandated gastroenterologists to play an active role in the management of weight loss. Several insurance carriers have recently mandated that patients prior to bariatric surgery participate in a structure weight loss program. Arising out of frustration at the lack of effective weight management programs in the area we have decided to use our skills as board certified gastroenterologists to create a program like no other in Texas. With this in mind, it is with great pleasure that we announce the opening of our premier weight loss program, NuWell Health.
NuWell Health is unique because it incorporates three facets of weight management: medical therapy, nutritional counseling and behavioral education. Studies have consistently shown that when these three tools are used together patients are able to achieve significant and long lasting weight loss and health benefits. The main reason why most programs fail is due to a lack of this comprehensive approach.
NuWell Health is founded incorporating research based, scientific principles that have been proven to work. We are not in the business of selling supplements or meal replacements. When necessary, FDA approved medications will be used in adjunct to behavioral and nutritional counseling. Several new drugs are currently in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials and look very promising. For some individuals bariatric surgery may be the best option and we will work with the patients’ surgeon to ensure that optimal results from surgery are obtained.
At NuWell Health, we aim to partner with you to manage your patients’ weight loss and nutritional needs. Patients will undergo comprehensive evaluation by medical, nutritional and behavioral professionals after which an individualized program will be prescribed. Throughout the treatment program you will be sent regular updates on your patients’ progress and they will be referred back to you for management of ongoing medical problems.
